University of Virginia

In the fall of 2005, the University of Virginia launched the Virginia College Advising Corps (VCAC), then called the College Guide Program, to address the widening gap in college access for low income, first-generation, and underrepresented students. Initial funding was provided by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. Since then, VCAC has:

  • held 134,137 one-on-one appointments with students;
  • presented 22,679 classroom visits and workshops;
  • hosted 10,887 meetings with parents;
  • planned and accompanied students on 4,023 campus tours;
  • assisted 7,544 students on SAT preparation;
  • ensured completion of 9,592 FAFSA applications; and
  • guided over 10,000 students through enrollment in post-secondary institution.

Founded at the University of Virginia, College Advising Corps expanded nationally in 2007 and now has programs in 15 states. This year, VCAC places 22 near-peer advisers in 26 partner high schools across the state of Virginia.
