I helped organize a FAFSA completion session at the school along with members of different Latino organizations. Many of the volunteers did not understand the financial aid process and needed extra help when the event was actually under way. I was fortunate enough to have had sufficient training to know how to answer many of the difficult questions. I turned out to be the biggest asset in the room and it felt good to be able to teach the families and the volunteers about financial aid.

“Mr. Alvarez stops what he is doing just to help out a student or a parent," said Celia Cambray, a student of Eduardo’s. "It does not matter if the student is a sophomore, a junior, or a senior; he is willing to provide information if he has the knowledge and capability of giving it to the student. I am glad that we have a college adviser who understands our circumstances, and in some way we can relate to him.”

Spotlight on Service

Paulin Cheatham was a part of the College Guide Program at the University of Virginia. While serving with the program, he had the opportunity to work intimately with students and their families, in helping them reach their goal of attending college.
